About Us
KomshiLOOK is a multidisciplinary platform that brings art, community, and culture together, rooted in the spirit of komshi — neighbor. It grew from the belief that strong societies are built on good neighbors: people who share, collaborate, and support one another.
From the start, our aim has been to blur the line between art and everyday life. A courtyard can host a concert. A balcony can stage an opera. A bus ride can become theater. Through events, workshops, and partnerships, KomshiLOOK has turned neighborhoods into vibrant cultural spaces where creativity thrives naturally.
At the heart of the project lies memory and connection. We invite residents to look at their surroundings in new ways, to open their homes and yards, and to contribute their skills and resources. Culture here is not distant — it is lived, shared, and experienced together. This collective approach not only strengthens community ties but shows how art can confront real social challenges.
The idea of komshi goes beyond geography. It is a social and emotional bond — the way neighbors watch out for each other, celebrate together, and help in times of need. KomshiLOOK embraces this tradition, reviving and expanding it through artistic collaboration. By bringing neighbors and artists together, the festival renews the value of shared spaces, mutual aid, and collective action.
KomshiLOOK is more than cultural entertainment. It is a platform for learning, empowerment, and advocacy. By working with residents and public authorities, we demonstrate how cultural engagement can drive tangible change. Walls have been painted, entrances renovated, and spaces transformed into welcoming environments. Each action proves that culture is not a luxury but a necessity — a force that inspires pride, strengthens responsibility, and helps communities imagine new possibilities for themselves.
Goals
Decentralizing Culture in Skopje
KomshiLOOK brings culture out of the city center and into neighborhoods often overlooked by mainstream events. By activating courtyards, streets, and residential blocks, the festival shows that culture doesn’t belong only to institutions. It belongs to people, in the places where they live.
Young People as Leaders
The festival is driven by a young core team, supported by emerging artists and cultural workers. Their energy shapes the program, curates the activities, and ensures that new generations are both leading and participating.
Community Engagement and Empowerment
KomshiLOOK thrives on collaboration with residents. Neighbors host performances, support logistics, and co-create workshops, turning the festival into a shared achievement that strengthens trust and pride in the community.
Art in Everyday Spaces
A bus ride becomes a stage, a balcony a concert hall, a market a gallery. By placing art in unexpected places, KomshiLOOK breaks down barriers between artists and audiences and makes culture part of daily life.
Multidisciplinary Encounters
From theater and dance to music, installations, and digital projects, KomshiLOOK celebrates diversity in artistic expression. This variety ensures that there’s something for everyone, creating a festival that is inclusive and alive with exchange.
Stronger Local Communities
At its heart, KomshiLOOK is about komšiluk — the neighborly spirit of hospitality, care, and solidarity. By celebrating art together, the festival strengthens these bonds and reminds us that vibrant neighborhoods are the foundation of a healthier society.
