Traces Trough the City
What if a bicycle ride could leave a drawing behind.
Traces Through the City is a GPS bike art project where the route itself becomes the artwork. A group of cyclists rides through Skopje following a carefully planned path. When the ride is recorded with GPS tracking, the final trace appears on the city map as a line drawing. Streets become strokes. Crossroads become turns in a composition. The city turns into a canvas you can move through.
This project sits somewhere between performance, mapping and public space art. It is not a sculpture you stand in front of. It is an action that unfolds in real time, in the middle of daily traffic, sidewalks, river crossings, and neighborhoods. The artwork exists first as a shared experience, then as a visible trace a map can hold.
The idea is simple, but what it does is powerful. GPS art reverses the usual direction of public art. Instead of placing an image into the city, it pulls an image out of the city. The drawing is made from the logic of streets, the shape of blocks, the rhythm of bridges, the hidden shortcuts, the climbs and descents you only feel on a bike. Every city creates a different result because every city has its own geometry, its own obstacles, its own flows.
Skopje is a perfect place for this kind of work. It is a city of contrasts and layers: planned and improvised, monumental and intimate, fast roads and quiet residential passages. Riding through it as a group changes the way you read it. You notice how neighborhoods connect or don’t. You discover lines you didn’t know existed. You pass through places you normally skip. The ride becomes a guided tour, but also a collective drawing session.
There is also something poetic about making art in a language machines understand. GPS traces are usually used for sport, optimization, and data. Here, the same technology becomes a tool for imagination. The map stops being only a navigation system and becomes a surface for expression. A route turns into a sentence. A city becomes readable in a new way.
Traces Through the City is also about visibility. It invites people to occupy streets with care and presence, not as owners of space but as temporary co-authors of it. It shifts attention from destinations to movement, from efficiency to curiosity. For the participants, the work is the ride: the pacing, the effort, the conversations, the small moments of coordination at intersections. For the audience, the work appears afterward as an image and a story, something you can share online, print, archive, and repeat.
This project is supported by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of the Republic of North Macedonia.
